As part of Trading of Traditions, Lila Bhawa presents Bawang Putih Bawang Merah, a well-known story, similar to Cinderella, in Indonesia and Malaysia. Bawang Putih (Garlic) is the daughter of a wealthy man who, on his wife’s death, re-marries a woman with a child from a previous marriage, Bawang Merah (Shallot). Shortly afterwards, the father dies and Bawang Putih is left at the mercy of her stepmother, who always favours her own daughter and is vicious and cruel to her stepdaughter. Events then unfold.

The piece by the UK-based Lila Bhawa Dance Company uses classical and contemporary Indonesian dance styles.
